In the very heart of Moscow, on Theatre Square, stands a magnificent building that has been a symbol of luxury and refined elegance for 120 years — METROPOL Hotel Moscow. This architectural masterpiece, built in the Art Nouveau style at the beginning of the last century, has witnessed revolutions, wars and changing eras, while remaining one of the capital’s most prestigious and iconic hotels.

History Etched in Stone

Metropol was conceived as a symbol of the new, progressive Russia of the early 20th century — a grand cultural center combining a hotel, theater, restaurants and art studios. Construction, which began in 1899 under the patronage of renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist Savva Mamontov, owner of Russia’s first private opera company, was an ambitious project that brought together the leading architects, artists and sculptors of the era, including William Walcot, Mikhail Vrubel and Nikolay Andreyev. The famous majolica panel “Princess Dream”, based on Vrubel’s design, remains one of the Metropol’s most recognizable features to this day.

Throughout its long history, the capital’s landmark hotel has welcomed numerous distinguished guests — from members of the Russian imperial family and prominent cultural figures to politicians and internationally renowned stars. Chaliapin’s voice once echoed through these halls, Isadora Duncan danced here, and the hotel hosted Bernard Shaw and Marlene Dietrich. During the Revolution, Metropol became the scene of fierce fighting and later served as a residence for the Soviet government. The hotel witnessed landmark historical events that played an important role in the country’s history.

Metropol Today: Tradition Meets Modernity

Today, METROPOL Hotel Moscow is a modern luxury hotel that has preserved its unique historic atmosphere and rich cultural heritage. The hotel offers guests the highest level of service, luxurious rooms, exquisite cuisine and a wide range of amenities. Live music can still be heard here, while exhibitions and cultural events continue to take place.

As it celebrates its 120th anniversary, METROPOL Hotel Moscow continues to write its history, remaining an integral part of Moscow’s cultural heritage and a symbol of luxury, elegance and hospitality. It welcomes guests from around the world to experience history and enjoy impeccable service in the heart of the Russian capital.
